About Me

Dr. William D. Allen is a licensed marriage and family therapist and owner of Healing Bonds, a private practice serving individuals, couples and families located in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis (621 West Lake Street, Suite 330, Minneapolis, MN 55408). He is also adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas where he teaches family science and marriage and family therapy. He also consults regularly with government agencies and social service organizations on a range of subjects related to family mental health and well-being including how to improve individual and organization cultural competence. Dr. Allen’s publications include discussion of effective therapies for working with youth and families in the nation’s child welfare system, and clinical approaches for working with African-American males. He has also written about the clinical implications of research on marriage and families, as well as parenting in culturally diverse families. His research interests include the intersection of families and ethnicity, and the important roles males play in family life across the lifespan. He has served in leadership with several organizations including the Minnesota Association of Black Psychologists, the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the Kente Circle Training Institute, and the University of Minnesota’s Consortium on Youth and Families. He was most recently President of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) which in 2011 awarded him the Marie Peters Award in recognition of his significant contributions in service to ethnic minority families. In 2013, he received the Ruth Hathaway Jewson Award for distinguished service to families from the Minnesota Council on Family Relations. Dr. Allen is available to see patients Tuesday through Thursday at Healing Bonds but can also be reached during the work week by phone or secure voicemail at (612) 701-3813, or by e-mail at ballen@umn.edu . “Remember, what you practice, you become…”
